The pull wasn't nostalgia alone. Encore adds roughly four new minutes of footage that directors Anthony and Joe Russo have described as 'required viewing' for anyone planning to see Avengers: Doomsday in December — connective material that ties Endgame's ending directly into the new film's setup, rather than a simple extended cut for its own sake. Marvel has kept exact details of the new scenes under wraps, but early audience reactions point to material involving the wider multiversal setup Doomsday is expected to pay off.
The re-release also doubles as the launch of Infinity Vision, a new premium-large-format certification Disney announced at CinemaCon in April and rolled out with this reopening — theaters have to meet minimum specs (45-foot-plus screens, immersive audio like Dolby Atmos, and set brightness levels) to carry the Infinity Vision badge, and Endgame Encore is the first release to carry it. Disney says over 300 theaters worldwide are certified so far, with thousands more applications pending. Audiences seeing Encore in IMAX or an Infinity Vision-certified house also got an exclusive extra look at Doomsday footage not included in the standard theatrical presentation.
