Avengers: Doomsday Brings Robert Downey Jr. Back to the MCU — as the Villain, Not Iron Man
Anthony and Joe Russo return to direct a cast pulled from three separate franchise eras, arriving December 18 with Downey playing Victor von Doom.
Marvel Studios used San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H for the reveal it had been sitting on: Robert Downey Jr., the actor most synonymous with the MCU's first phase as Tony Stark, is returning — but not as Tony Stark. Kevin Feige brought Downey onstage in a green cowl and suit to confirm he's playing Victor von Doom, Doctor Doom, the villain at the center of Avengers: Doomsday. Downey's own line to the crowd — "New mask, same task" — became the moment's headline as much as the casting itself.
The reaction split roughly the way a reversal that large tends to. The Hall H crowd chanted Downey's initials on the spot; the wider response afterward was more divided, with plenty of fans questioning how the actor makes the jump from the MCU's most beloved hero to one of Marvel Comics' most infamous villains, and others reading the move as a deliberate course correction after Jonathan Majors' exit ended Kang the Conqueror's run as the franchise's next-phase antagonist. Whatever the read, it's a genuinely unusual bet: recasting a studio's own most recognizable face as the thing its heroes are fighting.
Anthony and Joe Russo are back directing, their first Avengers film since Endgame closed out the Infinity Saga in 2019 — the directors most responsible for the MCU's biggest ensemble set pieces, brought back for a film built to be the biggest one yet. The official poster reflects that scale ambition on its own: a towering, backlit Doom in green light, with the line "12.18.26 is Doomsday" replacing anything resembling a traditional tagline.
The cast list is where the film's real structural gamble shows. Alongside returning MCU regulars — Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Letitia Wright, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour and more — Marvel has pulled in Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Channing Tatum, actors tied to 20th Century Fox's pre-Disney X-Men and Gambit projects, a lineup the marketing has framed as "heroes from three distinct universes" colliding. It's the clearest sign yet of how Marvel intends to actually use the Fox catalog it inherited, rather than simply owning the rights and leaving them unused.
At roughly 165 minutes, Doomsday is positioned as the direct lead-in to Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, closing out this phase of the multiverse arc the same way Infinity War set up Endgame. Marvel has released multiple trailers and a D23 special-look reel building toward the date; Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters December 18, 2026.
