Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson Star in Verity, Amazon MGM's Adaptation of Colleen Hoover's Bestseller, Out October 2

Verity is one of the higher-profile Colleen Hoover adaptations to reach the screen since It Ends With Us, and Amazon MGM Studios has assembled a genuinely stacked cast to carry it: Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett lead an R-rated psychological thriller directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick, The Eyes of Tammy Faye), with a screenplay by Nick Antosca, whose credits run through Hannibal and Channel Zero — a background in genuinely unsettling television that shows in the film's marketing.

The novel's premise centers on Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to complete the remaining books in a series by injured, incapacitated bestselling author Verity Crawford. Moving into the Crawford household to finish the work, Lowen finds an unfinished manuscript that reads less like fiction than confession — autobiographical notes that suggest Verity's own family history is darker than anything published under her name. The job puts Lowen in increasingly close, complicated proximity to Verity's husband Jeremy, played by Hartnett, blurring the line between research and involvement in a way the marketing has leaned into directly.

Casting Hathaway as Verity is a real departure for an actress mostly associated with warmer, more sympathetic roles over the past decade; early trailer reaction has focused specifically on how unsettling her performance reads against type. Johnson, for her part, has built a recent run of exactly this kind of morally ambiguous, quietly controlled lead performance, and Hartnett's presence as the husband caught between both women rounds out a triangle the marketing is clearly betting can carry the film on star power alone.

Amazon MGM has not yet released review-embargo details ahead of the October 2 opening, so there's no critical consensus to report yet — this is very much a film arriving on the strength of its cast and its source material's built-in readership rather than pre-release buzz from critics. Given how much of the marketing hinges on tone and performance rather than plot mechanics that are already well known to the book's readers, Verity's opening weekend will be a real test of whether Hoover's specific brand of domestic-thriller intensity translates as well to Hathaway-and-Johnson-caliber star power on screen as it has on the page.
